Hearth & Home Design Center has been locally owned and operated by Herb and Mary Ann Herendeen since 1977. It was originally known and The Practical Answer, and sold woodburning stoves. The company incorporated as Hearth & Home Design Center in 1987, adding fireplace distribution in 1991. Philip J. MacGregor partnered with Herb and Mary Ann to distribute to the builders of Michiana.

Drew Herendeen joined the company in 1998 as Operations Manager overseeing the distribution of Majestic, Vermont Castings and Napoleon products to Indiana, Michigan, Illinois and Kentucky. Hearth Products Distributing (HPD) was formed to service the dealer market.
